In communities throughout California and around the nation, LGBT people face high rates of discrimination, harassment, and exclusion. Despite media portrayals of LGBT people as white and middle or upper class, in fact LGBT people exist in every community. Many have limited financial resources, come from marginalized cultural and/or geographic backgrounds, and need legal aid services and support. Fulfilling the promise of legal aid advocacy means bringing our expertise and resources to these populations. This session will cover basic LGBT terminology, the unique needs of LGBT low-income clients, practical approaches to discussing sexual orientation and gender identity with clients, and steps offices can take to provide welcoming and respectful services to LGBT clients.
Presented by: Cathy Sakimura of the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Dan Torres of California Rural Legal Assistance
