The program’s heyday was in the early 1950s, when radio actor, producer and director Elliott Lewis took over (still during the Wilcox/Autolite run). Here the material reached new levels of sophistication. The writing was taut, and the casting, which had always been a strong point of the series (featuring such film stars as Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, Judy Garland, Ronald Colman, Marlene Dietrich, Eve McVeagh, Lena Horne, and Cary Grant), took an unexpected turn when Lewis expanded the repertory to include many of radio’s famous drama and comedy stars — often playing against type — such as Jack Benny. Jim and Marian Jordan of Fibber McGee and Molly were heard in the episode, “Backseat Driver,” which originally aired February 3, 1949.

The highest production values enhanced Suspense, and many of the shows retain their power to grip and entertain. At the time he took over Suspense, Lewis was familiar to radio fans for playing Frankie Remley, the wastrel guitar-playing sidekick to Phil Harris in The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show. On the May 10, 1951 Suspense, Lewis reversed the roles with “Death on My Hands”: A bandleader (Harris) is horrified when an autograph-seeking fan accidentally shoots herself and dies in his hotel room, and a vocalist (Faye) tries to help him as the townfolk call for vigilante justice against him.

With the rise of television and the departures of Lewis and Autolite, subsequent producers (Antony Ellis, William N. Robson and others) struggled to maintain the series despite shrinking budgets, the availability of fewer name actors, and listenership decline. To save money, the program frequently used scripts first broadcast by another noteworthy CBS anthology, Escape. In addition to these tales of exotic adventure, Suspense expanded its repertoire to include more science fiction and supernatural content. By the end of its run, the series was remaking scripts from the long-canceled program The Mysterious Traveler. A time travel tale like Robert Arthur’s “The Man Who Went Back to Save Lincoln” or a thriller about a death ray-wielding mad scientist would alternate with more run-of-the-mill crime dramas.

The Republican-dominated Arizona state Senate passed a bill on Wednesday designed to provide legal cover for businesses that refuse to serve LGBT people.

KPHO in Phoenix reported that bill sponsor Sen. Steve Yarbrough (R) claims that the legislation protects the “religious freedom” of private business owners, but critics of the measure say that conservatives are attempting to codify bigotry into law.

Yarbrough proposed an earlier draft of the bill in January, but legal experts warned that as written, the bill could potentially discriminate against single women and individuals who do not practice the Christian faith.

Across the country, same-sex couples are gaining the right to marry. Alarmed that same-sex couples will attempt to pay them to practice their professions, Christian bakers, wedding photographers, florists and other professionals have drawn a line in the sand, refusing on the basis of “conscience” to provide the goods and services they freely supply to the rest of the population.

Conservative lawmakers in several states have rushed to the beleaguered business owners’ aid by attempting to pass laws that allow them to legally refuse to perform their jobs if they are doing so on the basis of “sincerely held religious beliefs.”

The bills follow a pattern established by retrogressive lawmakers in multiple states — including Idaho, Tennessee and Kansas — who are attempting to throw hurdles into the path of marriage equality. Rather than openly declare their anti-LGBT intentions, right-wing lawmakers and operatives have cloaked their prejudiced agenda in the guise of a quest to protect Christians’ “religious freedom.”

On Tuesday, however, Republican lawmakers in four states saw major setbacks in their attempts to pass these types of exclusionary laws.

Facing intense pushback from colleagues and constituents, GOP lawmakers have voted down, withdrawn or backtracked on their proposed anti-LGBT laws in Kansas, Idaho, South Dakota and Tennessee.

Freedom to Marry president Evan Wolfson told BuzzFeed, “Our opponents have lost the argument about gay people, they’ve lost the argument about marriage and all they have left is distractions, diversions, and desperate attempts to carve out the license to discriminate as they have tried in every other civil rights chapter in our nation’s history.”

Rexburg woman loses $13,000 in online scam – 844-292-1318 Idaho legal aid

Rexburg woman loses ,000 in online scam

REXBURG – A local woman is learning that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, says a friend told her about a website giving away stimulus money grants to all who apply.

She went online, provided personal information to the site and sent the company a ,000 money order.

“The individual claimed he was with the government and they had excessive money,” Rexburg Police Captain Randy Lewis says. “She initially had to send in 00 and then they requested another few thousand to get it through customs.”

The website promised the woman would get between one and two hundred thousand dollars back.

Once the woman realized this was a scam, she contacted the Rexburg police department and filed a report.

Police say there are thousands of bogus websites and you should never send money to individuals you don’t know.

“There are tell-tell signs,” says Lewis. “Watch for language barriers, misspellings, and remember that no one is going to give away free money.”

The victim tells police she went to her bank and is working to see if she can get her money back.

Meanwhile, AARP Idaho will be hosting a free Consumer Fraud Forum designed as a fun, educational and interactive event where participants learn to avoid today’s scams while getting the tools and resources they need to protect themselves. The forum will focus on local, regional and national scams and the tactics con-artists use to trap their victims.

Speakers include AARP Idaho, Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen, Better Business Bureau, Idaho Department of Insurance (SHIBA), Idaho Legal Aid Services, and Representative Elaine Smith.

The event takes place October 1, 2015 at the Shoshone Bannock Event Center in Fort Hall. Registration and a complimentary breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. The forum takes place from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and includes a free BBQ lunch and door prizes.
