This week, we go back in time to May 10 and September 18, 1991 on WCVB-TV (ABC). Special thanks go out to VaultMasterDBT for correcting me on the dates.
I really do try to have these things up during the week, but, once again, work and family life have intervened. Of course, with Thanksgiving coming up, I can’t promise that I’ll have another video up on time next week, but I’ll do my best.
To make it up to you all, I’ll put together something for Christmas that I think you’ll really get a kick out of.
0:00 to 0:30 – Coca-Cola (Skysurfing has become something of a lost art, owing to its difficulty (YOU try balancing on a surfboard while falling at a velocity of over 150 mph, and that’s not even mentioning some spinning maneuvers that can be extremely painful to perform thanks to blood pooling), dearth of qualified trainers, and lack of corporate funding after ESPN removed it from the X Games in 2000.)
0:32 to 0:45 – Hellmann’s Mayonnaise (I always loved those strings at the end)
0:48 to 1:17 – Peanut Butter M&Ms
1:18 to 1:32 – Pizza Hut
1:34 to 1:48 – Kellogg’s Fun Pack
1:49 to 2:18 – Chevrolet S-10 Blazer (so called because of its Chevy S-10 Truck base design, the S-10 Blazer was a compact SUV produced between 1983 and 2005. Similar to the GMC S-15 Jimmy, the 1991 model introduced a four-door bodystyle, as well as standard 4-wheel anti-lock brakes. Here’s the Edmunds review http://tinyurl.com/6qd9h29.)
2:20 to 2:49 – Oscar Mayer Deli-Thin (you may miss interacting with your fellow human being on the other side of the counter, but at least the added fat, sodium, and preservatives you don’t get from fresh deli meat more than make up for it, amirite?)
2:50 to 3:19 – NewsCenter 5 promo (of the four newscasters at 3:15, only Mike Lynch—at the farthest right—is still working at WCVB, also Gov. Bill Weld (1991-1997) at 2:55, who later went on to attempt to run for New York governor in 2006, 3:11 – WTF is that?!?)
3:20 to 3:50 – Hot Shots promo (1991 comedy directed and co-written by Jim Abrahams, one of the minds behind 1980’s classic comedy “Airplane!”, and starring Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, and Cary Elwes. It is a product of its time (post-“Top Gun”, post-Cold War, post-Persian Gulf War), but is certainly enjoyable, and enjoyed critical and commercial success in its day. Here’s a scene from the movie: https://youtu.be/TNkvLDF7JOY. And, no, I didn’t post this video because of Charlie Sheen’s revelation last week.)
3:50 to 3:55 – Hey, I spent a LOT of time on that transition! AND the corrections afterward! :-p
3:55 to 4:25 – Sega Genesis (Growing up, I didn’t have either console—in retrospect, that was probably for the best—but, having played games on emulators of both systems, it really all comes down to gameplay rather than graphics. Also, in today’s dollars, that Genesis would set you back 6.81. [Insert “blast processing” joke here].)
4:25 to 4:55 – JC Penney
4:57 to 5:27 – Simply JIF Peanut Butter
5:28 to 5:57 – Drink Box Recycling (from what I can tell, this was an effort by the Aseptic Packaging Council, an NPO representing the two biggest drink box manufacturers in the US—Tetra Pak and SIG Combibloc—-that was founded after the state of Maine banned drink boxes when environmental groups alleged that the boxes were not easily recyclable (http://tinyurl.com/puwyq5). The NPO was ultimately successful in establishing drink box recycling nationwide (http://tinyurl.com/qdem662), and the Maine ban was lifted in 1994.
The animation was produced by Pixar (yes, THAT Pixar), and was directed and animated by Peter Docter, then the company’s tenth employee. He later went on to direct “Monsters, Inc.” “Up”, and “Inside Out”.)
Also, the PO Box listed is now being used by the WildCat Conservation Legal Aid Society.)
5:58 to 6:27 – Super Nintendo
6:28 to 6:58 – Ocean Spray Cranapple (it seems that the song used in the ad was produced specifically for the ad (unfortunately). Later on, it was used by a “Morning Zoo” radio show hosted by Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill, and became an object of derision during Opie & Anthony’s yearly Jocktober feature. Regardless, I tend to believe that most media would be improved by the addition of the song.)
6:59 to 7:19 – Life Goes On/America’s Funniest Home Videos/America’s Funniest People promo (“Life Goes On” was a family drama series primarily known these days for being the first TV show to feature a major character with Down Syndrome. Here’s the opening: https://youtu.be/JSj5Ge-7PO4. The primary reason you might know about “America’s Funniest People”, which was, at heart, a comedy-oriented talent show, is because of Jack Ching Bada-Bing, a jackalope character voiced by Dave Coulier. Here’s a taste: https://youtu.be/By9sHP1MWVk. Also, here’s an NSFW outtake clip featuring legendary ABC announcer Ernie Anderson rehearsing intros/outros for AFP https://youtu.be/l3OQ2lkLoc4.)
