Venice and the Ottoman Empire: Crash Course World History #19 – 844-292-1318 legal aid Florence Alabama

In which John Green discusses the strange and mutually beneficial relationship between a republic, the citystate of Venice, and an Empire, the Ottomans–and how studying history can help you to be a better boyfriend and/or girlfriend. Together, the Ottoman Empire and Venice grew wealthy by facilitating trade: The Venetians had ships and nautical expertise; the Ottomans had access to many of the most valuable goods in the world, especially pepper and grain. Working together across cultural and religious divides, they both become very rich, and the Ottomans became one of the most powerful political entities in the world. We also discuss how economic realities can overcome religious and political differences (in this case between Muslims and Christians), the doges of Venice, the sultans of the Ottoman empire, the janissaries and so-called slave aristocracy of the Ottoman Empire, and how money and knowledge from the Islamic world helped fuel and fund the European Renaissance. Also, there’s a They Might Be Giants joke.

If you really want to read about Ottoman eunuchs (warning: it’s explicit), here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunuch#Ottoman_Empire

  1. why is Albania predominately Muslim resulting from ottoman occupation, but Greece is some 98% Orthodox still?

  2. I'm beduin from kuwait and my father's grandmother from ottoman empire (Armenia now) when armenia was under the domination of ottoman empire , her dress had gold weaving , , her name was rose or roselina or something like that i don't know 😂 i don't know how she married my father's grandfather and she lived in the desert and she named herself hraiba <SHE RUINED HER NAME OH MY GOD

  3. i STRONGLY SUGGEST TO SEE "hISTORY OF VENETIAN PEOPLE PART i" TO HAVE A COMPLETE IDEA OF THE FIRST REPUBLIC OF THE WORLD.

  4. Good video, but I need to tell you that Venice was a Republic It was THE FIRST REPUBLIC EVER IN THE WORLD, WITH ITS LANGUAGE, PEOPLE, FLAG AND CULTURE, PEACE, . (oF COURSE YOU VE SAID THAT IT WAS A REPUBLIC LATER IN THE VIDEO , BUT IT S VERY IMPORTANT TO SAY THAT SINCE THE BEGINNING OTHERWISE ONE CAN BE CONFUSED.. THANKS ANYWAY FOR THE GREAT VIDEO

  5. Venice and the Ottomans were not buddy buddy. They had seven wars against each other over territory in Greece and the Greek islands like Crete. This video is very misleading and paints a distorted picture of how the Ottomans and Venetians viewed each other. You could have at least mentioned those wars, all of your other videos are pretty much spot on. However this one is just inaccurate.

  6. I swear the Mongolian exception never gets old no matter how much crash course I watch.
